Heritage Council to meet, offers new cookie tin and Heritage Fair
The Heritage Council of North Augusta will host a Heritage Fair on Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the North Augusta Community Center.
The new slate of nominated officers will be announced; artist Jim Harrison will bring some of his newest work for purchase; local potter and pottery historian Gary Dexter will also have some of his work available for sale; and Mark Albertin will have copies of his documentary, "Displaced...," for sale.
In addition, the Heritage Council will present its newest cookie tin, this year featuring the new North Augusta Municipal Center. The tins will be available for purchase, along with volumes I and II of the History of North Augusta and copies of Jeanne McDaniel's book on James U. Jackson.
Refreshments will be served at the Tuesday meeting.

Artists Guild featured at Sacred Heart
Nov. 5 is the opening reception for the North Augusta Artists Guild show at Sacred Heart Cultural Center, Augusta from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Eleven members of the Guild will be featured artists in the Art Hall during November and December. They are: Jean Blackmer, Wanda Dansereau, Margaret Estep, Dorothy Goodwin, Beth Jones, Jan Kozel, Janice Livingston, Yvonne Sobel, Doris Sofge, Ondaree Kelly Tucker and Gail Wheeler.
Carolina Oaks ribbon cutting
A ribbon cutting and grand opening will be held Thursday, Oct. 29, at Carolina Oaks Bed and Breakfast, 819 Carolina Ave.
The celebration will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with the ribbon cutting set for 5:30 p.m.

Dual enrollment topic of College 101
In an effort to fill the gap as the IB program is phased out, North Augusta High School is partnering with USC Aiken and Aiken Tech for dual/concurrent enrollment.
Courses will be available in January, as well as during the summer of 2010 and next school year. Registration for January classes will begin in November. Students must pay for the classes.
As a result of the upcoming new options, during the next early release Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 1:30 p.m. the College 101 session will feature representatives from Aiken Tech and from USC Aiken, which will give details on how the dual enrollment program works and what students must do to participate.
Another informational meeting will follow the NAHS event on Thursday, Nov. 5, at South Aiken High School at 6:30 p.m.

Buy poinsettias at Fox Creek
The Fox Creek High School PTCA annual poinsettia sale has begun.
The school is selling 6-1âÑ2- and 8-inch red poinsettias for $12 and $20, respectively.
Orders will be taken through Nov. 13.

West Avenue merchants yard sale
West Avenue merchants are once again joining forces to benefit the Department of Social Services Foster Children's Christmas Fund.
On Saturday, Oct. 31, from 7:30 to 11 a.m., stores on West Avenue will hold a yard sale. Among those already committed to participate are Regions Bank, Anything Goes, La Petit, Radiant Well-Being, Sno-Cap and Singing Hills.
Anyone else wishing to participate may do so by paying $25 for the spot.
There will be a jar for donations at the yard sale locations as well as items for sale.

Reunion of NASH classes of 82-85
The North Augusta Senior High Classes of 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985 will hold a joint reunion during Thanksgiving weekend.
Since the high school was frequently known as "NASH" in those days, the event is the NASH Bash 2009," set for Friday, Nov. 27, at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Martinez from 7 p.m. to midnight.
There will be hors d'oeuvres, music, dancing and a cash bar.

Preparations for Christmas Parade
Plans are well under way for the annual North Augusta Lions Christmas Parade to be held Sunday, Dec 6, at 3 p.m. The theme for this years Parade is, "Christmas Past & Present."
Applications are available at the North Augusta Chamber of Commerce, 406 West Ave. (Phone 279-2323).
The Lions Club of North Augusta sponsors this annual event as a community service to North Augusta in appreciation for the support rendered by this community over the years to the Lions.
Proceeds from the Parade are used for projects in the local community and to prevent blindness locally and world wide and to train seeing eye dogs.

'Spooky to be Hungry' sites
The North Augusta Chamber of Commerce's annual "Spooky to be Hungry" campaign will begin on Oct. 1. Folks wishing to donate are asked to bring any nonperishable food items by the Chamber office located at 406 West Ave., Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more information, call 279-2323.

Brick Yard Market changes hours
With the shorter and shorter days, the Brick Yard Market in Hammond's Ferry is now open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Charity receives 501(c)(3)
SmartKids. SC has been officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Donations that help local schools get the supplies they need are also tax-deductible.
Local teachers can submit their school supply requests to smartkids.sc/helper/addnew.php.
This year's focus is on elementary and middle schools in and around North Augusta and the southern part of Edgefield County.
This is the organization's second year of supporting teachers and students in the CSRA., according to Ed Elser, SmartKids, SC executive director. The effort is to match donors with schools in need and run academic contests with prizes donated by local businesses.

Looking for memorabilia
The Arts and Heritage Center is looking for memorabilia from the 1960-1969 era for a display in October.
Folks are asked to bring anything from North Augusta High School athletic items, school jackets, a prom dress, vintage cars, football trophies, etc.
Items may be dropped off at the Arts and Heritage Center Tuesday through Saturday anytime from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All items will be returned.

Pet-a-Fair is Oct. 25
The CSRA Humane Society will hold its annual Pet-a-Fair at Julian Smith Casino on Sunday, Oct. 25, beginning at noon.
Pet contests of the cutest, most unusual dog or cat and other type of pet contests will be held as well as a silent auction and vendor tables of food. Contact the shelter if you would like to donate new items for the silent auction.
Arts and Heritage Center needs volunteers
The Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta is seeking volunteers who would be interested in working for three hours anywhere from once a week to once a month.
