Creatures of habit?
During the Chamber tour of the Palmetto Parkway construction, a Carolina Bay was pointed out. Carved out by a meteor shower eons ago, the Carolina Bay was something DOT apparently tried to acquire when purchasing rights-of-way for I-520. It's apparently still privately owned; however, archaeology-types have been allowed to study. Director of Economic and Community Development Skip Grkovic noted they went in and knew exactly where to look for Native American artifacts. "For some reason Indians always camped on the Southeast side of such bays," he said.
Home body
Alan Wertz with U.S. Constructors said he really likes the company he's working for but when the Palmetto Parkway is completed, the nearest contract is a lot farther from Aiken County than he would like to be. Pointing to the Walnut Lane project just getting underway in North Augusta, Wertz said, "We'd love to do that for you."
Not admitting it
In trying to orient the folks on the Chamber tour, Alan Wertz pointed out MAE Video and said, "Most of you are familiar with MAE Video." After a pregnant pause, the laughter began and Wertz blushed and added, "I mean [familiar] with the area."
