'Catch the beat'

Local kids were able to "catch the beat" at Nancy Carson Library Friday afternoon as Toby Trull and Jeremy Marion led the hands-on program. Guitarist Marion made up songs on the spot and pulled kids from the audience to be involved. Luke Cash, 10 years old, accompanied on the drums. Trull talked a little bit about the rhythms and where they came from at the beginning of the program -- how some rhythms sounded like the deserts in Africa and then he transitioned into a beat that sounded like a jungle beat. He handed out different instruments to the kids in the crowd -- maracas and cow bells and other types of shakers -- and the children joined in with the beat once they got over their shyness.
