Three Aiken County schools win Red Carpet Award
Three Aiken County public schools - Mossy Creek, East Aiken and Warrenville elementary schools - were among 42 schools statewide to win Red Carpet awards from the State Department of Education for being family-friendly.
The award focuses largely on front office personnel.
Area 2 Assistant Superintendent Rosie Berry made a surprise visit to Mossy Creek to inform them of the award and now the school awaits the delivery of a "red carpet" which will hang in the school
"Schools that are parent-friendly, schools that have strong customer service, are more likely to be supported by their communities," State Superintendent Dr. Jim Rex said in a press release. "Community involvement can play a big part in a school's academic success. This year's Red Carpet winners understand and strive for that."
The award showcases the wonderful efforts of Mossy Creek's front office staff, said Assistant Principal Laurie Reese.
"It's how they greet visitors and make everyone feel good about the school," she said. "This year our School Improvement Council also focused on school beautification, making the school more family-friendly. There were a lot of beautification efforts in the hallways."
According to the State Department of Education, schools that got through the written application phase were screened by independent judges. During phone calls and visits to schools, the judges did not identify themselves as they rated how they were treated by front office employees and other personnel.
The Kershaw School District had four winning schools. Aiken was one of four districts statewide with three winners.
