Routine meeting for Area 2 Advisory Council
By: PHYLLIS BRITT
The Area 2 Advisory Council spent a very few minutes on the public portion of last week's monthly meeting and then spent the rest of the evening hearing appeals of students recommended for expulsion.
For the last couple of months the seven-member panel has split into two groups to consider appeals simultaneously to shorten the time spent hearing such student requests.
During the regular meeting the panel approved a request to hold a cheer leading camp at Paul Knox Middle School on July 21 and another request for Belvedere Elementary School to charge a $10 fee to all students joining the Belvedere Running Club.
The panel also approved a change in rental fees for school district property, mainly to reflect the actual costs incurred with those rentals -- including electricity and clean-up.
Each school reported events coming up or recently completed:
Mossy Creek Elementary School principal Rose Marshall reported the staff finally has voice mail so parents can leave messages specifically for the teacher they're trying to contact.
Janet Vaughan, principal at Hammond Hill Elementary School, announced the school had indeed received $10,000 from the Cartoon Network following the school's participation in a Guinness Book of World Records 4-square competition held last week.
At North Augusta Elementary School principal Dr. Angela Burkhalter announced the students are currently voting in the Lucky Leprechaun contest. The "winning" teacher will wear a leprechaun costume on St. Patrick's Day. She also reported the school raised $500 in the Jump Rope for Heart activities.
North Augusta Middle School assistant principal Wendy Jacobs said the school had three winners in the local DAR Essay Contest, as well as the first-place team in the Future City competition. (The team now goes on to the national competition.)
Paul Knox Middle School principal Brenda Smith said orientation is set for March 26 and reported the school has three contestants in the North Augusta IDOL competition.
At North Augusta High School principal Kyle Smith told the Council that NAHS was the first high school in the U.S. to receive a visit from a UNESCO representative. He added that Juilliard School was to be at the school this week and Pi Day would be celebrated Friday, March 13, since the 14th was on Saturday. He also said Matt Murphy recently ranked 21st in the nation in an air rifle competition.
