Through my eyes
How tasteless can one be?
When I was anchoring the news at Channel 12, I was asked a couple of times to be a presenter at the Georgia Emmy Awards banquet in Atlanta. The first time I did this I went to a rehearsal of the show in the afternoon, prior to the event that night. When I walked into the room, the only other person there was David Letterman, who was the emcee for the program. I said hello and that my name was Charley Britt, to which he replied, " Charley Britt, why does that name mean something to me?" I had no idea, but I thought perhaps we had an L.A. or New York connection through some mutual actor or athlete friend. In the next breath he said, looking at his script, "Oh, here it is; you are the first presenter." He and I both laughed, but not to be out done, I said "Yeah, if you knew me, I guess that would qualify you as some kind of trivia expert!" He seemed to enjoy that a lot and we became, sort of buddies for the rest of the rehearsal and the show that night. Now, having said all that, I left with the impression that he was a pretty nice guy.
Boy, how my thoughts have changed on that. I know you know where I am going with this, but allow me to repeat the comments Letterman made on his show about Gov. Sarah Palin and her 14-year-old daughter. The governor and her child had visited a New York Yankees baseball game and Letterman compared the governor's looks to that of a slutty flight attendant and made the statement that her daughter, during the game, was accidentally "knocked up" by Yankee star Alex Rodriguez.
Not that you need reminding, but these comments are being made about a sitting United States Governor, and her 14-year-old child! I know, at this stage of his career Letterman does not write his own material, but, come on, I know he has script approval and this multiple insult is squarely on his shoulders. It IS his fault. And let us not forget the flight attendants. I doubt Letterman flies commercial anymore, but if he ever does show up, a spilled tray of hot coffee in his lap I think would be appropriate!
I do not care what your politics are -- it makes no difference if you are so left of center that oncoming traffic is a problem for you and you hate all things conservative, there is no excuse for the above mentioned dialogue! Tenth generation democrats, if they are decent people, would have a hard time laughing at these supposed "jokes."
Speaking of jokes, let me enter the name, Perez Hilton. He is the judge in the Miss U.S.A. pageant that made the statement after Miss California, Carrie Prejean, in answer to a question, said that she thought marriage was the domain of a man and a woman, that if he could he would have moved Miss Prejean completely out of the top 50. Now, what right does Hilton have in making a statement like that? Miss California said not only was that a belief that she was taught by her parents, but that it was Biblical. I guess that is just too much for Hilton, who is, in my opinion, a pandering sycophant to movie stars, athletes and celebrities of any description.
I am out of space and my poison sacks are empty so I will close, but before I go, agree with me, "How tasteless could these people be?"
