Crestview wins at Continental Cup
Crestview continued its winning ways with a 12-9 victory over Winfield on Friday at New Haven in the 302 Polo USPA 16-goal Continental Cup presented by Progressive Show Jumping.
A quick first-half start by Crestview helped propel the team to a 5-1 lead early in the third chukker. Winfield quickly erased the deficit on goals from the field by Ruben Coscia and Willie Hartnett and a 30-yard penalty conversion by Horacio Onetto, reducing Crestview's lead to one goal.
A natural hat trick by Alan Martinez in the 4th chukker gave Crestview an 8-4 lead. Horacio Onetto scored on another 30-yard penalty shot and Ruben Coscia scored from the field with 32 seconds left to reduce the margin to two goals.
Crestview's two strongest chukkers against Barrington on Wednesday were the fourth and fifth chukkers, and they dominated play during those periods against Winfield. Martinez opened the scoring again with two consecutive goals. Crestview's John Eicher made it 11-6, and Martinez tacked on another score give Crestview a six-goal lead. Coscia scored from the ensuing bowl-in for Winfield. Onetto scored with 39 seconds left in the period to cut the lead to four goals.
Coscia provided the offensive highlight during the sixth chukker, taking the ball the length of the field to reduce the goal deficit to three.
"We were unlucky enough to be ahead by a goal at halftime," said Owen Rinehart of Crestview. "In the second half we played pretty well and got a pretty sizable lead, and then we guided it on home. Alan made three phenomenal goals in the fifth chukker that put the game out of reach."
The tournament continues Sunday with two games with Barrington versus Winfield at 11 a.m. and Crestview versus Firstview at 2 p.m. at Isinya.
