The Williston-Elko Blue Devils defeated the Great Falls Red Devils 24-0 Friday night in the opening round of the Class A playoffs.

Williston-Elko, in typical Blue Devil fashion, scored quickly on its first possession. Dexter Staley returned the opening kickoff to the Great Falls 47-yard line. Four plays and 1:35 later, the Blue Devils were up 8-0 after a 16-yard Tamyn "Gator" Garrick touchdown pass to Rokeem Williams and a successful two-point conversion by Kendric Salley.

However, the remainder of the half was atypical for Williston-Elko. Uncharacteristic procedural penalties plagued the Blue Devils, who committed seven penalties before halftime. Garrick was off the mark, completing just 4-of-9 passes. Williston-Elko's high-powered rushing attack could only muster 108 yards against a surprisingly stout Great Falls defense. The Red Devils' sure tacklers held Salley and Staley to few yards after contact. Two Williston-Elko fourth-down conversion attempts in Great Falls territory were unsuccessful.

The Red Devils were in business right off the bat in the second half, with Terrelle Hutchinson taking the kickoff to midfield. The double-wing option attack of Great Falls gave Williston-Elko fits, with rushes by Ernest Telford, Zack Barber and Isaiah Lynn accumulating first down after first down. Great Falls was faced with a fourth-and-inches at the Williston-Elko 25-yard line. Telford received the handoff and was immediately dropped in the backfield by Marcus Bates, who came up the middle untouched.

Williston-Elko's Montrel Davenport recovered a Shaquille Lamar fumble at the Great Falls 29-yard line. Garrick hit Quantel Mack on a 24-yard scoring strike, then hit Staley for the two-point conversion to give the Blue Devils a 16-0 lead.

Following another defensive stand highlighted by another failed fourth-down conversion. Williston-Elko got the ball back. With the ball on their own 30 and 7:31 to play, the Blue Devils embarked on a 12-play, 70-yard scoring drive. Salley shouldered the load and punched it in from a yard out. Salley converted the two pointer, giving Williston-Elko a 24-0 lead with 1:10 to play.

Williston-Elko finished with 303 yards of total offense, 206 coming on the ground. Salley carried the ball 25 times for 151 yards and a touchdown. Staley recorded 102 all-purpose yards. The Blue Devils defense pitched another shutout, led by 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks from Darryl Salley. Andrea Williams and Marcus Bates each recorded six tackles and Shamel Harley had five.

The win keeps the Blue Devils undefeated at 11-0 and moves them into the second round of the playoffs, where they will have homefield advantage against Hunter-Kinard-Tyler, which the Blue Devils beat 40-22 earlier this season.

"We learned some valuable lessons tonight," Williston-Elko head coach Dwayne Garrick said. "What did surprise me was our lack of discipline. We hadn't played like that all year long. We did a great job on defense. If we're going to win this thing, defense will do it."
