Thurmond wins without its quarterback
JOHNSTON -- The Strom Thurmond Rebels handled the Eau Claire Shamrocks in the opening round of the Class AA Upper State Playoffs 43-7.
In a game marred by penalties and turnovers by both teams, the Rebels were able to move the ball on the ground with Nick Williamson and Desmond Davis. Williamson had 73 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns. Davis, who started at quarterback for Raleigh Yeldell, ran for two scores.
The Rebels suffered two more key injuries when linebacker Nick Clark injured his knee in the first quarter, and linebacker Vince Phillips suffered a concussion in the third quarter.
Strom Thurmond coach Lee Sawyer wasn't pleased with the amount of offensive penalties but was glad his defense was able to make adjustments and contain Eau Claire's quarterback Ronald Weeks in the second half. He said that the defense was more focused and was able to create turnovers.
Sawyer added Yeldell could have played Friday but sat him as a precaution. He, along with other key players, should be ready next week as the Rebels will stay home to face the Broome Centurions in the second round of the playoffs.
