High school playoff picture clearing up
While North Augusta High School and Aiken High School will have one more regular season game - going head-to-head Friday at North Augusta - to try to punch their playoff tickets, five area teams are already in and will begin postseason play this week.
In Class AAA, Midland Valley High School earned the right to play its opening-round game at home with a win over South Aiken High School on Friday. The Mustangs, who finished second in Region 5-AAA, will welcome Crestwood High School to L.L. Willis Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Thoroughbreds, who finished third in Region 5-AAA, will be on the road. Robert Wrigthenberry's club, which upset Hilton Head High School in the opening round of the Class AAA playoffs last season, will try to do the same against Camden High School, also Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Two area teams earned No. 1 seeds in Class AA as a result of their region championships. Strom Thurmond High School finished a perfect 5-0 in Region 3-AA to win that crown, while Silver Bluff High School went 5-0 in Region 5-AA to come out on top there. Both teams will host first-round games Friday night at 7:30 p.m., with the Rebels welcoming Eau Claire High School in the Upper State bracket and the Bulldogs taking on Bishop England High School in the Lower State draw.
Williston-Elko High School was the only one of the four area Class A teams to extend its season longer than the 10 games originally scheduled. The Blue Devils completed a perfect regular season with a win over Blackville-Hilda High School Friday, and they earned the top seed in the Class A Division II Upper State bracket. Head coach Dwayne Garrick's team will host eighth-seeded Great Falls High School in the opening round Friday at 7:30 p.m.
As for the scenario in Class AAAA, North Augusta is already in but will try to improve its seeding by beating Aiken on Friday. The Hornets, meanwhile, have to win to stay alive, and they will also need some help to earn one of the 16 spots in the Class AAAA Division II bracket.
