10-year-old West Columbia girl drowns in pond

LEXINGTON (AP) -- Authorities say a 10-year-old West Columbia girl has died after she fell into a drainage pond while playing with friends.

The coroner's office says Teneisha Smalls slipped off a bank Sunday while playing near the pond behind her house.

Authorities say Smalls was rescued from the pond but died later at the hospital.

The owner of the pond says it fills with runoff from nearby Interstate 20 when it rains.

Deputies have ruled the death an accident.
