Jolene Collins and Heather Gagdon admit they had doubts about joining the Midland Valley High School band as freshmen this year.

But both girls arrived Monday for the four-day rookie camp and "it's been fun," Collins said.

Band director David Hastings was joined by drum major Devin Simpson, captain/section leader Heather Wright and other section leaders this week. Hastings had held a rookie camp for a few years but had gotten away from the concept before resurrecting it this season.

"I wanted the new band members to have a low-key, low-pressure week," Hastings said. "We could do more one-on-one and slowly take the kids through the basics. I think it worked out OK. They were a bit more comfortable and asked a lot of questions."

As a first-year drum major a year ago, Simpson admitted he initially felt like a rookie all over again. He's excited about getting that experience and having the chance to return to that role. He was happy to help out with the rookies.

"I hope they realize it's one big family," said Simpson. "They've learned a lot, and once we get started (next week), they can really get it."

Wright was an eighth-grader her rookie year. Her older brother was a senior, and he and his friends were tough on her, but it made her a better bandsman. However, Wright had some sympathy for the first-year varsity musicians Thursday.

"It's hard when it's 100 degrees and you're learning basics and going over them again and again," Wright said. "But the best part for rookies is that when classes start, you've got 100 friends. If you see a band person, that's family and they'll make sure you get where you need to go."
