Son charged with murder of father

The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office arrested the son of a man shot to death in his home last month.

Phillip Anthony Merriweather, 35, is charged with the murder of Raymond Merriweather. The senior Merriweather was found dead at his home on June 22.

Cpl. Robbie Harter, a spokesperson with the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office, said he is being held at the Edgefield County detention center.

Sprinklers contain mall fire quickly

Aiken Public Safety Capt. Wendell Hall said a fire that ignited early Wednesday at the Aiken mall was contained by the overhead sprinkler system before firefighters arrived, stressing the importance of the fire suppression devices.

Shortly before 2 a.m., rags stored at a food court restaurant started the fire, he said.

Had those sprinklers not worked or not been installed, this had the potential to be a big mess, he said.

No injuries were reported.

Woman reports she was shot at

Aiken County Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating an Aiken woman's report that she was shot at while driving on Whiskey Road earlier this week.

The victim told deputies she was driving a moped when a black SUV pulled up next to her and slowed down.

She said the driver reached over and pulled out a gun out and fired at her, striking her in the leg. She was treated at a Georgia hospital. The incident is under investigation.

South Aiken ROTC to hold event

The South Aiken High School Naval Junior ROTC will hold an indoctrination for new cadets Monday, Aug. 4 through Wednesday, Aug. 6 from 8 a.m. until noon each day. Students should meet in front of the school each morning, wearing T-shirts, shorts, athletic shoes and should bring a water bottle. Students who are not enrolled in NJROTC and are interested in learning more about the program are welcome to attend.

ATC to hold nursing information session

Aiken Technical College will host a nursing information session at the amphitheater (room 701) Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. Information related to the field of nursing will be provided, including registered and licensed practical nursing and discussion on ATC's competitive selection criteria. There is no fee for the meeting.

Southeastern Bank declares dividend

The Board of Directors of Southeastern Bank Financial Corp. (OTCBB: SBFC), the holding company for Georgia Bank & Trust Company of Augusta and Southern Bank & Trust, declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of $0.13 per share of common stock payable on Aug. 18, to shareholders of record as of Aug. 5.

"We are pleased to pay our normal quarterly dividend to shareholders. In a banking market where many other institutions have cut or suspended such payments, it is a testament to the strength and soundness of our organization, our markets and our management," said R. Daniel Blanton, president and chief executive officer.

Pre-build meeting to be at Fox Creek

David H. Wulff Architect Inc. will be holding a pre-bid Meeting at Fox Creek High School on Thursday, Aug. 7 at 10 a.m., for potential bidders on the construction of the new Fox Creek High School on Shortcut Road in southern Edgefield County. Bid date is scheduled for Aug. 28.
