After nearly two decades under the management of its current contract holder, the Savannah River Site is preparing for new leadership.
Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, a partnership among Fluor Corporation, Honeywell and Northrop Grumman, is in the 90-day transition process of taking over the management and operation contract of SRS from Washington Savannah River Company.
The SRNS leadership team brings with it a wealth of expertise from the three major companies which comprise the Site's new M&O contractor. Chuck Munns, a retired Naval admiral, is president and chief executive officer of SRNS and will be the face of the new company to the public. He brings with him experts in various technical fields from Fluor, Honeywell and Northrop Grumman to lead the new management team.
As has been the case since the beginning of SRS more than half a century ago, safety will be the primary focus of work under SRNS. Mr. Munns stressed the importance of safety in a video directed to SRS employees when the transition period started last week. He closed his comments to fellow SRS workers with the simple reminder, "Be safe." That speaks well for the continued health and well being of the workers at SRS.
A changeover of this kind has its difficult moments as leaders of WSRC who have taken on significant roles in our community face uncertain futures. Many of them may still remain as the liquid waste contract at SRS is being sought by WSRC. We thank them for all that they have done for the Site and for the communities which surround SRS. And we look forward to a new partnership with the Savannah River Nuclear Solutions team as it works with thousands of employees to do the work required by the contract for the Department of Energy and the people of the United States.
The primary job of SRS throughout its history has been to work for the protection of the people of our country. That is a mission that will continue under SRNS.
