The Lower School students at Aiken Preparatory School learned more about Thanksgiving than just the traditional history of the pilgrims and Indians.
Students in Bonnie Culbertson's first-grade class participated in her annual Thanksgiving Feast. Each child was assigned to bring items to make a traditional vegetable soup. On the morning of the feast, students took turns adding their ingredients to the pot and stirring. A few hours later, the first graders sat down to enjoy the meal they had worked together to prepare in the spirit of the first Thanksgiving.
"I wanted everyone to help," Culbertson said. "The children learned manners, how to serve themselves, and tried something new."
The soup was the highlight of the meal.
"It's the best stuff I've ever tasted in my life," said first-grader Henry Gelinas.
Parents who were there to help out with the event also enjoyed it. Parent Maxcine Maxted said, "They have learned to be thankful for their blessings."
The 4K students had a Thanksgiving feast of their own. Frances Reynolds' 4K class read books about the first Thanksgiving and enjoyed a meal of fish sticks, tater tots and green beans. They also made and decorated turkey masks as part of their Thanksgiving week and visited the Turkey Federation where students got to learn about turkeys and take a virtual helicopter ride.
"It was so cool," said 4-year-old Collin Smith.
In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, Aiken Prep Lower School students also practiced giving. Students made treat bags full of toiletry items and snacks for the men and women at the Council on Aging. Students sang songs and read poetry to them, then handed out the bags and hugs.
