NAHS girls roll past South Aiken
North Augusta High School's Teanda Cunningham did all of her scoring - six points - in the first quarter Friday evening, and it was almost enough to match South Aiken's output in the first frame, as her squad cruised to a 58-31 win at home.
Jared Adamson, North Augusta's coach, saw his team advance to an overall record of 13-3 and a Region 5-AAA tally of 2-1 as it headed toward a Tuesday match at home against Aiken.
Adamson's squad is to be on the road Friday versus Orangeburg-Wilkinson and return home Jan. 27 to face Lexington, to begin the second round of region games.
Against South Aiken, the Lady Yellow Jackets jumped to a 22-7 lead and never looked back.
Countering for South Aiken was Kyasia Youmans, who bagged 10 points as her squad slipped to a record of 8-3 overall and 0-3 in the region. Teammate MaKenzie Smith added eight points.
Jasmine Coach, with 12 points, was the top scorer for North Augusta. Joining her in double digits was teammate Jurell Coach, with 10 points.
"We got off to a good start," said Adamson, who had scoring from 10 of his 11 players. "Right off the tip, our defense created offense. We got some layups in transition ... We did a better job of finishing our lay-ups to start the game and didn't give them any idea they could hang with us."
Earlier in the week, Adamson's squad racked up another lopsided win, 62-44 on the road against White Knoll.
Other remaining home games in the regular season are to be Jan. 31 against White Knoll and Feb. 9 against Orangeburg-Wilkinson. Adamson described Lexington and Orangeburg-Wilkinson as particularly tough teams in the region this year, and added, "Any given night, anybody can beat anybody."
The most recent poll from the High School Sports Report has Spring Valley as the state's top AAAA girls' team, followed in order by Dutch Fork, Dorman, Mauldin, Goose Creek, J.L. Mann, Greenwood, West Ashley, Ridge View and Wren.
