College 101 to include ATC information

The next early release segment of College 101 at North Augusta High School is next Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 1:30 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Amanda Chittum, the financial aid director at Aiken Technical College, will be the presenter.

Any student who plans to apply for financial aid to any college may attend.

Parents are invited also.

Time to pay fire fees to Belvedere Fire District

The Belvedere Fire District fire fee statements were mailed out Dec. 15. Payments are due by Jan. 31.

Any changes in property assessments and ownership should be reported to the district office at 279-5505, ext. 10.

Heritage Council hears from Lee Sheridan

On Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. at the North Augusta Community Center, the Heritage Council will welcome Lee Sheridan (Lynn), a pioneer in broadcast journalism in the CSRA.

Sheridan has been a resident of North Augusta for 54 years and has a distinguished career of community involvement, including being past chairman of the local chamber of commerce. He is one of four men to be inducted into the North Augusta Sports Hall of Fame at the Jan. 30 banquet.

He began his broadcast career with WRDW television in 1956 and retired as station manager for WAGT television in 1991.

'River Night' being planned

The Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta will present "River Night" on Friday, April 30, at the North Augusta Community Center beginning at 7 p.m.

There will be a live and silent auction with heavy hors d'oeuvres. Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple.

"River Night" is a major fund raising event for the Arts & Heritage Center. Two years ago the Center's board of directors held River Days, which raised around $18,000 for the Center.

The Center is looking for donations for the auction -- anything from vacation home packages, gift certificates, art, jewelry, baskets of items, rounds of golf, college related items, etc.

Donation forms can be e-mailed upon request. Bring donated items to the Arts & Heritage Center.

Wardlaw Academy Basketball Fun Night

Wardlaw Academy will host a basketball fun night for alumni, parents, grandparents, teachers, staff, coaches, family and friends this Saturday beginning at 4 p.m.

There will be a game of basketball with all the school's teams in addition to the lower school students playing a game, performance by lower school cheerleaders, chicken stew prepared by Thurmond Burnett, a bake sale sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and surprise entertainment.

The Census Bureau will be testing for census taker jobs each Wednesday at Fairview Presbyterian Church in North Augusta.

Marine Corps collecting old flags

The Marine Corp League has two red U.S. flag repository boxes to collect flags that are in need of being retired.

One box is located at the center entrance to the North Augusta Walmart and the other at the North entrance to the Food Lion at Highway 25/I-20.



Chamber banquet is Feb. 16

The Greater North Augusta Chamber of Commerce will host its annual meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. in the North Augusta Community Center.

Congressman J. Gresham Barrett is the keynote speaker, and the 2009 Citizen of the Year will be announced at the event.

Sponsorships are now available, along with nomination forms for the Citizen of the Year.

Clean-up day at Post 71

The Jesse C. Lynch Memorial American Legion Post 71 will hold a Saturday clean-up at the Post Home on March 6

The cleanup is to prepare the Post Home for the "birthday" dinner scheduled March 12.



On Tuesday, March 2, at 7 p.m. at the North Augusta Community Center, The meeting of the Heritage Council of North Augusta will feature Coach Cally Gault, a 2003 inductee into the North Augusta Sports Hall of Fame and former head football coach for the North Augusta Yellow Jackets High School football team from 1953-1962.

During that time his record was 88-14-7. Between 1953-1956, the team amassed a 42-game winning streak. His North Augusta football team won the state championship in 1958 and 1961.

After coaching in North Augusta, he went on to coach at his alma mater, Presbyterian College, for 22 seasons. Coach Gault resides in Clinton with his family. Coach Gault will be joined by several North Augusta High School players, including Dick Day.
