Police nab Most Wanted suspect after tip
A Trenton man who has been on the Aiken County Sheriff's Office Most Wanted list since early January is in jail on allegations he shot a man in North Augusta.
Allen Michael Johnson, 19, was captured late Monday in the Augusta area. He is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and the possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Sgt. Dave Myers, a sheriff's office spokesperson, said a tipster led investigators to the 19-year-old man.
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office located him and confirmed he had been wanted by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office on allegations he approached a man in North August early the morning of Jan. 8, held him at gunpoint and attempted to rob him. The two fought briefly before the victim was able to get away, deputies said.
Investigators said the gunman then began firing the gun at the victim, striking him in the leg.
The victim told deputies at the time he didn't realize he had been shot until he stopped at a gas station to call for help.
Witnesses corroborated the victim's statements, and deputies later identified Johnson as the alleged shooter.
Sheriff Michael Hunt was quoted as saying that calls, such as the one made to police in reference to Johnson's whereabouts, have made a positive impact on the sheriff's ability to take a number of accused suspects off the streets.
Johnson is being held in Georgia and will face an extradition hearing before he is returned to South Carolina.
