FOTAS to sponsor open house, pet fair
Friends of the Animal Shelter is asking that the community show support at an open house/pet fair on Saturday, Nov. 21.
From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., the public will enjoy free food, Palmetto Dog Club demonstrations, clowns Waynebow and Star, an animal presentation by Savannah River Ecology Laboratory Ecological Scientist Whit Gibbons, free spay/neuter coupon drawings, prizes and more.
Pet adoptions will be available, and dog sitters, trainers and groomers will be on hand as well.
The Aiken County Animal Shelter is located at 411 Wire Road.
Friends of the Animal Shelter (FOTAS) incorporated in July to raise awareness of the shelter to help improve the quality of life for the animals there.
It took inspiration from a similar group in Oregon, which was incorporated 17 years ago to increase pet adoption, improve the quality of life for shelter animals and promote spaying and neutering.
"We want people to know what the shelter is, where the shelter is, and we're dedicated to getting more animals adopted from the shelter," said FOTAS member Joya DiStefano.
FOTAS is also dedicated to raising about $10,000 for shelter renovations and expansion and has already made headway toward reaching that goal with a fundraising breakfast at Applebee's earlier this year.
There will be opportunities for donations at the Nov. 21 pet fair.
