Man dies in single-vehicle crash
A single-vehicle crash in North Augusta on Sunday morning has resulted in the death of one man.
Gregory A. Maree, 35, was pronounced dead on the scene after an accident which occurred just past East Buena Vista Road on Highway 1 in North Augusta.
According to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, Maree was traveling south toward Augusta; as he drove around a curve, his vehicle left the roadway and struck the sidewalk near the Cheap Cigarettes store.
After hitting the sidewalk, Maree's 1995 Honda hit two empty, aboveground gas tanks, causing the vehicle to catch fire. The crash occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. on Sunday.
Maree was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple body trauma, according to Carlton.
He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
The crash is being investigated by the North Augusta Department of Public Safety and the Aiken County Coroner's Office.
Toxicology is pending.
