Five die in three-car accident

Four adults and a child died late Monday when three cars collided on New Holland Road in Aiken County, officials said.

All five were in one vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash occurred about 9:30 p.m., one mile north of S.C. Highway 302, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Crews were working at the crash site late, and at presstime, Carlton said they had not made next-of-kin notifications.

He said he was unable to release the names until later.

"The circumstances surrounding the crash are unknown at this time. However, the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Aiken County Coroner's Office are actively investigating this horrible tragedy," Carlton said.

Officials at the crash site had blocked off traffic into the area and were working with the state's accident reconstruction team.

There have been 18 traffic fatalities reported in Aiken County this year.
