High-speed crash leads to man's death

An Aiken County man was killed Friday morning during a high-speed motorcycle crash in North Augusta that was estimated to have been in excess of 100 mph, officials said.

Timothy Shane Frierson, 30, of North Augusta, was pronounced dead at the Medical College of Georgia at 3:23 p.m. from the injuries he sustained in the 8:30 a.m. single-vehicle crash.

His death is the first from a motor vehicle crash in the City of North Augusta this year, said Lt. Tim Pearson, a spokesperson for North Augusta Public Safety.

He died from a traumatic brain injury.

The 30-year-old man was traveling eastbound on Austin Greybill Road at what witnesses have said was a "high rate of speed," Pearson said.

He was driving a Kawasaki 600 ZZR motorcycle.

"He was approaching a curve when he left the roadway and crashed into a culvert," Perason added.

"We have physical evidence from the scene and three witnesses who said he was speeding before the crash," the lieutenant said.

The posted speed limit in the area is 45 mph.

"The evidence clearly shows he was wearing his helmet, but he had a lot of head trauma," Pearson added.

Frierson was taken to the Medical College of Georgia.

"Before you do anything on a motorcycle, please take extra precautions," Pearson said. "You don't have the protection a car or truck offers you. If you are involved in a motorcycle crash, the chances are much greater that you will be killed or severely injured."

Preliminary findings indicate that this may be an alcohol-related death. Further toxicological tests are pending.
