Author, photographer are offering chances for autographed copies
Aiken author Marti Healy and photographer Shelly Marshall Schmidt are offering two chances to buy signed copies of their locally produced coffee table book, just in time for Mother's Day.
The pair will sign copies of "Antiques in the Heart of Aiken," published by the local firm Design House Press, from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Aiken Office Supply on Whiskey Road and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 9 at The Book Stall on Hayne Avenue. Copies of the book are on sale at both locations.
"They are the perfect gift for Mother's Day. It's a lovely book, and it's a fundraiser for the Aiken Center for the Arts, so it's a chance to feel good on two counts," Healy said.
The book was unveiled during the preview party for the 2009 Antiques in the Heart of Aiken show in January. Healy and Schmidt signed books during the antiques show, but the new events will be the first opportunities since then to acquire autographed books.
"We've had very positive response to the book on several levels. People are surprised how light and fun it is - it's not a textbook on antiques," Healy said. "It's divided by chapter on a different category of antiques, and each chapter starts with a story that ties that category of antiques to Aiken. It shows how antiques really are at the heart of Aiken."
Healy is a columnist for the Aiken Standard and has published two books, "The God-Dog Connection" and her new novel, "The Rhythm of Selby."
Schmidt is a local fine-art photographer with a studio in the Croft Building. Her work can be seen at Women's Echoes on Laurens Street, which she co-owns.
