Fire death ruled suicide attempt

An Aiken County woman who died in a fire late Saturday evening did so by her own hand, according to law enforcement.

Aiken County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Lt. Troy Elwell said Monday that the fire was the result of a suicide attempt.

The identity of the deceased is not yet known officially and will not be released until the body has been identified.

Though authorities think the body is that of a resident of the home, the body was burned to a point that it was unrecognizable. DNA testing will have to be done to make an official determination, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton

Sunday.

The fire, at 826 Kedron Church Road, was reported around 10 p.m. Saturday.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the dwelling had sustained severe damage and was eventually, completely destroyed. Two singlewide mobile homes had been put together to form the home.

An autopsy was scheduled to take place Monday in Newberry, the results of which have not been released.
