Woman's burned body found at fire
A woman's body has been found at the site of an Aiken County fire.
The fire at 826 Kedron Church Road was reported around 10 p.m. Saturday night and, by the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the dwelling had sustained severe damage. Two single-wide mobile homes had been put together, said Tim Carlton, Aiken County coroner. The fire destroyed the mobile homes all the way down to the steel, he said.
"The body was burned beyond recognition," said Carlton.
An autopsy is scheduled today in Newberry.
"We'll absolutely have to use DNA this time. There are no other options to identify the body other then DNA."
The body has been circumstantially identified, said Carlton.
The victim is a white female, but release of the victim's name is pending notification of next of kin and positive identification. The presumed victim had a roommate, and information was obtained from that roommate, Carlton said.
"We have a good idea of who she is, and we're in the process of locating the next of kin," said Carlton. "We're faced with the challenge of locating the (presumed) victim's son in Lexington. All we have is the (presumed) victim's son's first name."
