Man killed in moped crash
A moped rider who was struck by a small pickup truck and thrown into the roadway was subsequently run over by an oncoming tractor trailer and killed outside of Monetta Friday morning.
Sylvester Morris of Batesburg was 52. He was wearing a helmet.
He was pronounced dead about 5:58 a.m. at the site of the U.S. Highway 1 crash site near Chinquapin Church Road.
He suffered multiple body trauma, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
The S.C. Highway Patrol's crash reconstruction team is investigating the wreck; however, the coroner said drugs and alcohol can likely be ruled out as a factor.
Morris was on his way to work at a nearby poultry farm and the driver of the pickup was also on her way to work when the first collision occurred, officials said.
The 2008 Yamaha moped was northbound on U.S. 1 in Aiken County when a 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck disregarded a stop sign and the two vehicles collided, officials said.
The pickup truck driver, Elizabeth Turner, of Batesburg, was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto U.S. 1.
Morris was thrown from the moped and in lying the roadway when he was struck by a northbound 2004 Volvo bobtail tractor trailer driven by Lowell Holloway, 68, of Leesville.
