Sweetgrass basket weaver to instruct workshop
Learn the skills of sweetgrass basket making and discover a deeper understanding of the heritage of the techniques.
In celebration of Black History Month, the Aiken Center for the Arts (ACA) is offering a Sweetgrass Basket Workshop. The workshop will be held on Saturday at the Aiken Center for the Arts. Led by Mount Pleasant instructor Vera Manigault, the class is open to everyone and no experience is necessary.
Sweetgrass baskets are uniquely from the Lowcountry and evolved from basket weaving skills brought to the United States from Africa more than 300 years ago. Manigault's baskets have been featured in Southern Living and were used in the movie "The Patriot."
The workshop will be from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and the cost is $120 for non-members and $108 for ACA members. Class sizes are limited, and pre-registration is required. Contact the Art Center at 641-9094 to register and receive a supply list.
The ACA is offering a wide range of workshops and classes in the upcoming months. During April and May, the Center will hold workshops focused on fused glass, plein air painting and palette knife painting. For more information and a full schedule, visit www.aikencenterforthearts.org.
The ACA is located in the heart of downtown at 122 Laurens St. S.W.
