Northside gains new apartment complex
A new apartment complex on the Northside is expected to be completed by the first of July.
Olde South Terrace, a 48-unit complex, will be located at the intersection of Rudy Mason Parkway and Beaufort Street. Grading and leveling of the 9-acre site is already under way.
"Aiken seemed like a good place based on marketing and need for housing," said Jake Ramsey, project manager for the general contractor Trust Mart Construction, which has done projects across the state in Conway, York and Newberry.
Vertical construction will start in six to eight weeks. The complex is not classified as Section 8 housing.
The complex will consist of four buildings with 36 three-bedroom units and 12 two-bedroom units. There will be a nature trail, gazebo, playground and a leasing office with community laundry room.
Though nothing is finalized, Ramsey said rent may range between $425 a month for a two-bedroom unit and $475 a month for a three-bedroom unit. The apartments will be leased on a one-year basis.
Aiken City Council approved the rezoning of the property in 2006 to multi-residential high density from residential single family and general business, according Rachel d'Entremont, a planner with the City.
The apartment facades will be 100 percent brick veneer, and each unit will be outfitted with Energy Star lighting fixtures and appliances.
Ramsey said the general contractor is still in the process of finalizing plans with the South Carolina Department of Transportation and has temporary approval to create access to the complex at the intersection traffic light.
