Businessman to run for District 86 seat
Aiken businessman Bill Taylor has announced his candidacy for S.C. House District 86, organizing his platform around tax reform and job creation.
Taylor will run in the June 8 Republican primary in his bid for the seat held by incumbent Rep. Jim Stewart.
Calling for immediate, bold actions in this challenging economic climate, Taylor proposes overhauling or eliminating altogether the state's "antiquated" tax system and championing a "common sense" tax code that is simple, easy and fair for all.
"I support a tax system that encourages entrepreneurs and businesses to achieve and grow, attracts new businesses and jobs to South Carolina, treats our citizens fairly and stabilizes funding for education," he stated in a press release.
He doesn't consider himself a politician. He is instead a small businessman and entrepreneur, who says he has built businesses from the ground up and who understands what personal risk and responsibility is when nothing is guaranteed.
He said he will take that same work ethic and personal responsibility with him to Columbia.
"Business-as-usual isn't working in Columbia," he said. "Our state government must reprioritize and become more efficient if it is to be productive in today's economy and effective in delivering the services people actually need.
"I ask where are the people of character, courage, conviction and common sense? Where are the 'statesmen' who care more about the people of South Carolina rather than their own political power?," he continued. "I believe we can work together and fix what's wrong, spend wisely and show that state government has the same resolve as do most South Carolinians - to work hard and do the right thing."
Taylor is a former television reporter, anchorman and news director. For more than 30 years, he has been an entrepreneur and media consultant/critic. He also served as a consultant to the George H.W. Bush White House from 1991 to 1992.
He serves as chairman of the Aiken County Chapter of the American Red Cross and is a member of Millbrook Baptist Church. He serves in the Aiken County Shrine Club and is also a member of the Aiken Rotary Club.
House District 86 covers about two-thirds of Aiken County surrounding the city of Aiken on the northeast, east and south and includes Cedar Creek, New Ellenton, SRS, Monetta, Montmorenci, Williston and a portion of Woodside Plantation.
