Former deputy Nation files suit against sheriff
Former Aiken County Sheriff's Deputy Jeff Nation has filed a civil lawsuit against Sheriff Michael Hunt, several deputies, and a South Carolina Law Enforcement agent.
Nation was terminated from his position in September 2008 after an incident in which he struck a teen he had stopped in New Ellenton. He was charged with assault and battery and misconduct in office. In a trial last month, the misconduct charge was dismissed, and Nation was found not guilty of the assault.
In the suit, filed Tuesday, Nation alleges his Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment rights were violated, and he names Hunt, deputies Dwayne Courtney, John Fogle and Jonathan Clough, and SLED agent Michael Perry.
The suit does not specify a dollar amount, but requests "punitive damages against the individuals, as well as an award of reasonable attorney's fees and costs against all Defendants.
