One dollar can make a difference in the lives of Aiken County children.

That is reason enough to make a donation to the Community Christmas Card fund supporting Aiken County Public School children throughout the year.

The impact, however, is significantly greater than one individual contribution. Compiling hundreds of donations from our community will fulfill basic needs that may be distracting kids from paying attention in classrooms, completing their schoolwork at home, or disrupting their cognitive learning and problem solving in this critical time.

This fund is designed to not only support our children but also alleviate some of the pressure felt by school counselors and teachers.

Outside my core family unit, no one was more significant to me than my teachers. Their praise, opinion and encouragement was like air to me when I was in elementary and middle school. From their sweet notes, tiny gifts, early morning and after school support, teachers fueled my lifelong desire for education.

Lifting up each individual student, oftentimes with personal funds, is an incredible burden on our educators.

Won’t you reflect on your own time in school or when you saw your children’s classmates who needed help to keep them on track? If you can give a dollar today, our community’s gift to school counselors is truly supporting education at the student, instructor and administration levels.

For every $1 donation, we will publish the donor’s name on the Community Christmas Card pages in the Christmas Day edition of the Aiken Standard and give 100 percent of the funds collected to the Aiken County School District.

Mail or bring your donation to our office at 326 Rutland Drive N.W., Aiken SC 29801 or use your PayPal account online at aikenstandard.tv. The last day to receive donations and be included on the Christmas Card is Friday, Dec. 14.

Rhonda Overbey is the publisher of the Aiken Standard and North Augusta Star.
