Stay in school or lose license

Keeping students in school until high school graduation should be a top priority for South Carolina. Educators say it is. Lawmakers say it is. But putting teeth into that claim is missing.

In a state that lags behind many others in education achievement, South Carolina has a dropout rate higher than is acceptable. In a modern economy where information and education are the keys to success, those without a high school diploma find themselves on the outside looking in.

There must be immediate incentives for young people to remain in high school beyond the distant view of future careers. Rep. Tom Young Jr. of Aiken thinks he has a way to entice teens to get their diplomas or pay a steep price. Rep. Young is interested in pursuing legislation that would tie a teenager's driver's license to being enrolled in school. If a student drops out, he or she loses the driver's license until age 18.

Such a piece of legislation might not eliminate the State's dropout problem, but it keeps some people in school who otherwise would leave, the individuals and the State will both be winners. South Carolina must make a dent in its dropout rate. In order to do so, the State has to let the students understand how important this issue is and how painful it will be if students leave school before graduating.

Chas is not only ignorant, he is a racist pig :  11/19/2009

Actually I am not a racist. But what I said about what black kids have been and still being taught is true. All you need to do is listen to Obama’s preacher the Rev. Wright to understand what is being taught.
On May 5, 2009 CNN.com published the following
Nearly one in five U.S. men between the ages of 16 and 24 (18.9 percent) were dropouts in 2007.
Nearly three of 10 Latinos were dropouts (27.5 percent).
More than one in five blacks dropped out of school (21 percent). The dropout rate for whites was 12.2 percent
Listen to black men like Charles Payne and Herman Cain and you will understand what black kids are being taught.
Black men like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson exploit poor black people for their own gain. Politicians like Obama, Pelosi and Harry Reid want blacks waiting for a handout.
You can call me racist if you want but the truth speaks for itself.

Lack of education is indeed a problem in the black community. The statistics concerning education among blacks back this up. Black scholars are ridiculed, called uncle toms and accused of acting white when they embrace education and shun the robbing, drug selling, thuggery, gangsta wannabe lifestyle.

Another Idea :  11/19/2009

Instead of taking their license away why not give businesses incentives to hire dropouts. If the dropout quits the job and is unemployed for a determined amount of time then they lose the license until they are 18. Not only will this make them productive members of society it can also curb the hiring of illegal aliens. It doesn't take to much education to pick up a shovel or pick peaches and these types of jobs are perfect for this.
By just taking their license away you are simply putting a feel good, blanket law out there which doesn't truly address the issue.

It's not a black problem :  11/18/2009

I am a white mother of a 17 year old who has had problems with staying in school. I have faith that he will one day become a responsible adult. I don't blame the schoole as much as that he is just not a person cut out to sit in a classroom. I don't know why anyone in this day and time should say it's a problem because people are black. God created us all and we need to stop this blaming of things on the color of peoples skin.

You can't make people learn anything :  11/18/2009

The real problem is the parents. The kids are taught that it is somebody else’s fault. It is taught in black churches and black homes. So they drop out of school and you have another generation on welfare. Why bother going to school when you can live off someone else. Stop the hand-outs and they will start staying in school.

Some of these children do not want to be there. They will make the teachers and other students pay. And pay they will. You can't make people learn anything. Only if they want to. You can bet if a teen doesn't want to go to school, it doesn't matter what you do. They will not go.

Bad call Mr. Young

:  11/18/2009

Yes, let's make school mandatory and horrible for the kids that actually want a degree without being forced. Learning should be optional. If the idiots that drop out get out into the real world and find they need that diploma, then they can either take the GED or take adult ed.

How about not allowing welfare or public assistance to those who don't graduate high school? Why not put some personal responsibility on people for a change.

Yeah, thats what they need to do, so they can't get to work. Good job Mr. Young. Lets tie their hands a little more.
