A new Squall ready to run?
Go Aikenite!
Could there be another Summer Squall on the track for Dogwood Stable? Perhaps the racing world will find out on Saturday when Aikenite, a horse named for the hometown of Dogwood Stable, runs in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Race.
A victory or even a strong showing for the 2-year-old could propel him into the Triple Crown races of 2010. As Summer Squall in 1990 provided the city with a reason to cheer, the same could happen with Aikenite. Summer Squall went on to finish second in the Kentucky Derby and win the Preakness that year. If Aikenite is all that Dogwood President Cot Campbell believes him to be, he could be leading the charge in those springtime races next year.
With a name like Aikenite, who in our area could resist pulling for this special horse? Mr. Campbell thinks of him as something special and gave him the name of the city he loves so much. "I always thought Aikenite would be a good name for a horse," he said. A good name indeed.
Post time for the race is set for 3:49 p.m. when a whole community can gather around their collective TV sets and cheer together. "Go Aikenite!"
