S.C. lands Boeing plant
Boeing's announcement that it will build an assembly facility in North Charleston is welcome news to a job-starved state.
In naming the South Carolina site for its second facility to build the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing has committed to a $750 million capital investment and the creation of 3,800 jobs within seven years.
The Boeing figures could be increased if companies integral to the construction of the 787 fleet decide to build new sites close to the North Charleston facility. This has the potential to spawn a whole new sector of employment for South Carolina and one that will require our education system to ratchet up to a new level.
While South Carolina has found itself the butt of jokes over Gov. Mark Sanford's situation and the end point of the lightning rod "You lie!" comment from Rep. Joe Wilson, the news from Boeing is something concrete economically that may shake the state out of its doldrums.
We welcome Boeing's commitment to the Palmetto State and look forward to a long partnership with a new industrial neighbor.
