Fair begins its run tonight
Forecast for the next week: Fair, fair and fair again.
The Western Carolina State Fair opens its gates this evening with rides, shows, exhibits, games and food that are all ingredients of a fall fair in the South.
The organizers of the Western Carolina State Fair have always held to the concept of a family-friendly event and do so with the idea of providing entertainment that is appropriate for toddlers through senior citizens. This year's fair promises more of the same.
And thanks to the edict from the fair organizers to the Sheriff's Office, the idea of safety will be further emphasized. The office of Sheriff Michael Hunt has issued a statement that those entering the gates will not be allowed to wear Halloween masks or any other facial covering that will prevent them from being identified. The only exception are the youngest of fairgoers, who will be able to wear their costumes if they are accompanied by adults.
This may seem like a small thing, but parents should take comfort in knowing that law enforcement and fair officials will not allow individuals who might try to create trouble into the fairgrounds. For some, the combination of a crowd, the exciting environment and the anonymity a mask creates a recipe for trouble. Not allowing Halloween masks into the fair is not a deterrent to fun but rather a reassurance that the safety and welfare of visitors is paramount.
The Western Carolina State Fair runs from tonight through Oct. 31 at the Fairgrounds on U.S. 1 north of Aiken.
