Wagener receives grant, will improve water system
Prior to the start of their September 7 meeting, Mayor Mike Miller and councilmen in the town of Wagener accepted a $500,000 state Department of Commerce grant presented by District 26 Senator Nikki Setzler.
The grant, a Community Development Block Grant, required a $50,000 match by the town and was one of 34 grants of its kind awarded throughout the state to help communities meet revitalization needs and improve economic opportunities.
"We have an area of town that has their water system way outdated," said Miller. "They don't have adequate pressure, and they don't have fire hydrants."
The grant will include water system work near Highway 39 and Route 302, Miller said.
Grant funding will allow for the upgrade of the outdated water system by looping smaller water lines and installing fire hydrants. A back-up connection to the town of Perry's water system for emergency use will also be completed thanks to the grant.
"We're real happy with it," said Miller. "That's a lot of money for Wagener. We have all the wheels turning."
A stipulation of the grant is that progress must begin within six months, and, according to Deborah Fair of the Lower Savannah Council of Governments, plans for the water system work are already underway. The projects will take two years to complete, she added.
Addressing the council and residents who turned out for the check presentation, Setzler said he believed the grant would allow for "tremendous improvements" to the town of Wagener.
The CDBG grant program has been funded through the state since 1982 by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974.
The Department has as its mission "to improve the well-being of all South Carolinians in a manner that supports and enhances a high quality of life."
Miller and town councilmen Dave Heffron, Jack Atkinson, Marlon Hudson and John Hudson accepted the check on the town's behalf.
