The crafts of September are on their way to Park Avenue as the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce prepares for the opening of the 34th annual Aiken's Makin'.

The annual crafts festival will take over Park Avenue from Chesterfield Street to Union Street from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday with two food courts, live entertainment stages, metalwork, toys, clothing, jewelry, glass, ceramics, textile art, garden items and handcrafted edibles.

"We're getting a lot of questions. People are calling all the time," said Dianne Phillips, director of finance and membership development for the Chamber of Commerce. "Everything is on track; the City has been working really diligently to get everything cleaned up and beautified and ready for setup. Of course our participants need to register to get all the latest and greatest info, but it's going smoothly."

This year's festival will feature a new layout, dictated in part by construction work around Park Avenue.

No booths will be in the center medians, and the westbound side of the street will be closed to traffic with booths lining each side of the westbound road. Food courts will be in the intersections of Park and Fairfield and Park and York.

"We have a new seafood vendor out of Maryland this year, and we're excited about him - we hear he makes the best crab cake ever," Phillips said. "We've got over 70 new craft vendors this year. Dough-si-Dough will be back; we recently lost Al Payne, but her daughter, Amy, is supposed to be coming with the Christmas ornaments this year. Pitter Patter is coming back, Wayne Senn is coming back with his toys, Ronald Barker is going to be here with his turned wood items, and the Tri-Development Busy Bakers and the Mennonite bakers will have booths. We've got some really unique jewelry artists coming, someone who does copper etchings and some interesting things in the glass division."
