Soulitude opens at Hitchcock

Visitors at an open house for the new Soulitude massage therapy center at Hitchcock Healthcare enjoyed refreshments and even better -- a complimentary chair massage.

The owner is Angela Key, a victims' service coordinator in the solicitor's office. About three years ago she opened Reflections, a beauty salon.

There wasn't sufficient space for massage therapy. When the opportunity at Hitchcock emerged, she decided to establish a second business, Key said.

"I believe in massage therapy," she said. "It's good for you, and I don't think people realize that. We want to offer it at a reasonable price, mainstream it and educate people about its benefits."

In early April Hitchcock leased space to the Family Y, then found extra space it didn't need, said Nicole Simmons, Hitchcock operations director.

Administrators knew that Soulitude's services "would complement our business as well as provide additional services to our patients," Simmons said via e-mail. "Having Soulitude in our building has been an exciting addition for our patients and our employees."

While Soulitude is an independent business, Key agrees that in addition to the general public, the company is also there to serve wellness clients with the Family Y and Hitchcock's patients receiving rehabilitation services. To accommodate people's schedules, the hours at Soulitude will be flexible.

The firm will offer chair and table massage and hand and sole paraffin wax dips. Seniors 55 and older can get a "sunrise" massage at a special rate.

The therapists are Erica Doyle, Kamaria Johnson, Shelly Heard and Angela Odum. Doyle, a recent graduate of Aiken Technical College's massage therapy program, is especially excited about the opportunity.

In 2007, Doyle completed Christ Central's Jobs for Life program, where she received a $2,000 scholarship to attend ATC.

"I thank God for the wonderful blessings he is bringing to my life," she said. "I'm really enjoying this. I have compassion for people, and I like to be able to accommodate them."
