Four new clay courts for Weeks Tennis Center

Workers are currently constructing four new tennis courts at the H. Odell Weeks Tennis Center, according to Glenn Parker, director of the City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

The courts are being built at the south end of the Weeks Tennis Center. The new courts will be made of clay and are being constructed by Tennico of Columbia Inc.

There are already two clay courts at the Weeks Center.

Parker said the new clay courts will be equipped with an underground irrigation system, which means the courts will be constantly watered throughout the day.

"It will allow people to be able to play on the court all day," said Parker. "It's a big plus."

Clay courts must be watered as a part of its maintenance, so the new additions will be more available to visitors.

Workers are also constructing a parking lot that will be located behind the courts, according to Parker.

He said the lot will provide additional parking for those who visit the Tennis Center, as well as for those who visit the track and play soccer.

"In the past, people have had to park in the grass," said Parker. "We've had a real problem in that area with flooding." The parking lot is being constructed by Pave-Way Inc.

The costs for the four new courts is $240,000 and is being paid for with money from the local option sales tax. The cost for the new parking lot is $200,000, and the money is also being provided by the local option sales tax, according to Parker.

He said construction for the new courts and for the parking lot should be complete anywhere from a month to a month and a half.
