WAAW 94.7 FM Rejoice radio will observe its sixth anniversary with an education-themed celebration Friday and Saturday, July 11.

The gospel station's celebration will kick off with a banquet at USC Aiken's Business & Education Building on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Stephen Peters, an educational consultant and motivational speaker from Orangeburg and a former principal and education administrator.

Tickets for the banquet are $40 and may be obtained by calling 649-6405 or at the station at 2166 Park Avenue in Aiken.

The station has scheduled a family fun day at Perry Park on Williamsburg Street Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The activities include the "One Race One World Racing for Diversity" stock car showcase and performances from gospel artists and choirs, including special guest performance by James Bignon, Justin Norman and Dorothy Norwood.

Other activities include praise dancers, food, clothing and service vendors, a barbecue cook-off, a health fair, a salute to Rejoice honors students, a youth showcase, inflatables, the Aiken County Public Library's bookmobile and motorcycle clubs. Admission is free.

"This is going to be awesome," said station manager Ruben Freeman. "The City of Aiken's Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism is joining us."

The Rejoice honors program began last fall, with the radio station announcing on the air kids whose parents send their names in for making the A and A/B honor rolls. Those students will be recognized at the fun day event around 2 p.m.

Donna Wesby, owner of The Greatest Gift and an Aiken County Board of Education member, is coordinating the banquet in partnership with WJPF-TV.

Earlier this year she began appearing on the radio station each Wednesday, conducting interviews related to education.

"It's another platform to share with the community my compassion for education and helping us come together," said Wesby. "This is a celebration year for us, with the station under new management. It's our way of saying thanks to the community."
