The Lower Savannah Council of Governments (LSCOG) is seeking a grant match from Aiken County Council to provide elderly-friendly transportation in the area.
The grant will be discussed at a special called meeting Tuesday.
LSCOG is applying to the U.S. Administration of Aging for funds to provide transportation to better meet the needs of older adults in Aiken County.
The service will include transportation companions, door-to-door and door-through-door transportation to help seniors better access the grocery store, doctors and more, according to Mary Beth Fields, area Agency on Aging coordinator.
LSCOG Mobility Manager Rhonda Mitchell said these new services will complement the agency's Best Friend Express well.
The transportation companions will be more able to assist seniors on and off the Best Friend Express bus because drivers are not allowed to leave the bus while en route.
"For example, a person can go to the grocery store but can't carry the groceries into their house," she said. "This person would help them."
The amount of the grant match is not yet known.
It is the only item on the agenda for the special called meeting.
Council will meet in chambers located at 736 Richland Ave. at 6 p.m.
