Saving pennies, nickels and dimes saves lives.
On Tuesday, the dedicated volunteers of the Aiken Relay For Life met at the Bank of America in downtown. During the five-hour event, Relay teams from all over the county dropped off large sums of money.
Fundraisers paid off and money flowed. According to Michael Brazier, community manager for Aiken and Edgefield counties, the Aiken goal for 2008 is $175,000 and, as of yesterday, funds raised totaled $136,849.61. With a little more than two days left until the event and $38,150.39 to go, no one is changing the goal.
Additionally, late last year Sherri Still and Craig Rich, co-chairs of the Aiken Relay For Life, agreed upon tattoos if the funds raised reach $225,000 for Still and $250,000 for Rich. As of today, ink is not in their immediate forecast; however, there are still a few more days of fundraising. As much as the pair does not want a tattoo, they would be ecstatic if the fundraising forced them to keep their word.
Through nationwide fundraisers, the American Cancer Society has enabled major advances in the battle for a cure. According to Brazier, 60 percent of all funds raised is allocated toward research with more than $3.8 billion to date funding research activities. The American Cancer Society stands alone from other nonprofit organizations in that their researchers have been awarded the Nobel Prize - and not just one, but 42.
In addition to leading the way in research, the American Cancer Society focuses on education, advocacy and service. Free hotlines, brochures, counseling and more are available 24 hours a day by calling 1-800-ACS-2345 or by visiting www.cancer.org.
Services available include Hope Lodges, Camps for Kids, Road to Recovery, Look Good ... Feel Better, Man to Man, the Cancer Survivors Network and the Reach to Recovery program. Many of these services are available locally in Aiken County. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with cancer, contact the American Cancer Society.
