Every good community has them. They are the people who work to get things done. Often behind the scenes, often doing things that others don't want to do, they get behind good projects and see them through to completion.
North Augusta is no exception. It is a community filled with people who work to make their community better and who see it as part of their civic duty to improve their city.
The community celebrated just such a pair of individuals earlier this week when the North Augusta Chamber of Commerce named E.J. and Shirley Holgate the recipients of the 43rd annual Citizen of the Year award.
The Holgates have been leading figures in North Augusta for many years. Mrs. Holgate worked as a teacher for many years, and Mr. Holgate worked as a mechanical engineer for DuPont.
Dr. John Bigger, a winner of the Citizen of the Year award in 2003, presented the award to the Holgates. He described the couple "simply as a pair of worker bees." There can be no better accolade for people who get things done in a community.
Dr. Bigger summed up their contributions to North Augusta rather concisely.
"To me they're a couple that have done and still do many things well together, but also have as individuals added immensely to the betterment of North Augusta."
Congratulations to E.J. and Shirley Holgate for the the honor that has been presented to them by the people of their community.
