Do you ever think that our country is falling apart and there is no hope for the future?
When you hear stories about gangs taking over the streets of large cities, of high dropout rates, of young people having no sense of family, community or purpose, are you sometimes deflated?
There is cause for hope. Need proof? A few hundred individuals recently completed their course of study at both Aiken Technical College and USC Aiken, walking across the stage at graduation ceremonies to receive their academic accolades.
There will be hundreds more in the next few weeks who will be recognized with diplomas from high schools across Aiken County. Many of those graduates will be going on to further their education, while others will test their skills in the employment world.
We congratulate them all on the goals which they have achieved and on the futures which all of them have the potential to reach in the decades ahead.
Among those who will be graduating from our local high schools who already have firm goals for the future are Will McMurtrie and John Kalsbeek. These two young gentlemen have been appointed to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., to pursue their college degrees and then to serve in the U.S. Navy.
Will is a senior at Aiken Preparatory School, and John is a senior at Aiken High School. That two students from our community have earned such a distinction in the same year is something that is noteworthy. It speaks volumes for the education available in Aiken County - both public and private - for the parents of these two and for the two students who have distinguished themselves so.
Congratulations to both Will and John for being honored with appointments to the Naval Academy. We thank them for their commitment to academics and for the service that they will render their country.
There is great hope for our future as both Will and John and scores of other young people demonstrate every day.
