Myanmar relief going nowhere

With nearly 1 million people without homes and wondering when food and medical attention will come, Myanmar is in a desperate situation.
The nation formerly known as Burma was hit by a deadly typhoon that killed thousands of citizens outright in some of the low-lying areas on the coast. Hundreds of thousands more are in need of relief supplies of food, clothing and medical provisions so that what has already been a disaster will not turn into a catastrophe of epic proportions.
That makes reasonable people wonder why Myanmar's leaders have been reluctant to allow foreign airplanes laden with tons of supplies for the survivors to land on the nation's soil. Planes have been in nearby Thailand waiting for clearance to fly into Myanmar with relief supplies.
It is unconscionable that the leaders of a nation will not accept the help of generous people around the world to bring assistance to victims of the typhoon. Political disagreements notwithstanding, one of the primary concerns of a government should be the welfare of its citizens.
Myanmar citizens are in need. Help is available. All that Myanmar's leaders have to do is give a nod of approval and assistance will come flooding in and lives will be saved. Requiring relief workers to jump through hoops to help those in desperate need is the height of arrogance and shows complete disregard for the people.
