The Senate Defense Authorization Bill that was passed out of the Senate Armed Services Committee had better news than expected for the Savannah River Site.

The portion of SRS funded through that part of the federal government was pegged to get an allocation next year of $1.28 billion which is $74 million more than was in President Bush's request for the Site.

Although the bill has a way to go before it goes into law, this preliminary action is very good news for our local economy and for the work being done at SRS.

Primary among the allocations the bill provides if enacted as written are the funding of $573 million for remediation of soil and ground water as well as demolition of facilities and deconstruction work as well as stabilization of nuclear materials.

Tank cleanup funding of $706 million is also provided in the legislation and $487 million for the year for the MOX facility which is under construction. This keeps money in the budget which will ultimately allow for the completion of this project which is vital to the nonproliferation of plutonium worldwide.

The work toward cleanup of SRS is important to the area's environment as efforts are being made to overcome the ill effects of half a century of work with highly radioactive materials and toxic chemicals. The cleanup also allows SRS to be ready for the day when new missions might be sent to the Site.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is to be commended for his efforts to bring adequate resources to cleanup and operation at SRS, which remains an integral part of the nation's nuclear community.
