Public Safety, EMS enhanced

The residents of Cedar Creek and other areas south of Aiken will soon be breathing a sigh of relief. The proximity of their homes to an Aiken County EMS facility is about to get closer.
Aiken County and the City of Aiken are combining efforts on a $1 million fire and EMS station on Citadel Drive in College Acres that will bring ambulance service several minutes closer to residents of that part of the county.
Ground was broken on the substation that will hold two fire trucks and an ambulance. Cedar Creek residents, who have been concerned over the lenght of time it takes Emergency Medical Service personnel to get to their development, will be within minutes of the new station. Rather than waiting for a vehicle to arrive from the vicinity of Silver Bluff High School, Cedar Creek residents will be hearing the sirens coming shortly after making an emergency call.
The substation is being jointly funded by the 1-cent capital sales tax with the City chipping in 60 percent and the County 40 percent. It is a collaborative model that the two governing entities may well use again in the future in providing services to their residents.
With an expected opening of the new structure by the end of the year, both Aiken City Council and Aiken County Council members can be proud of the cooperation they provided to make this joint project become a reality. While an asset for the Aiken Department of Public Safety and the Aiken County EMS, the real winners in this effort are the people of Aiken County who will be better protected and safer because of the new substation.
That is what government should be about - helping the people of a community.
