The City of North Augusta's plan to build a new park in Edgefield County is just another sign that the city's limits are moving northward.
City fathers recently approved the purchase of acreage in Edgefield County that will be used for a regional park and provide recreational opportunities for residents in the Merriwether community area. Part of the incorporated area of North Augusta currently spills over from Aiken County into Edgefield County.
At this point North Augusta is using a soft sell in its approach to annexing new Edgefield County property into the city. Those who want to become part of North Augusta may do so. Others are not being forced or coerced into making a decision to annex.
With continued growth in the North Augusta area and with the amenities that the city is able to offer residents, it is natural that the second-largest city in Aiken County will continue to grow. And that growth for the most part is into Edgefield County as new subdivisions sprout up north of I-20.
It is not outside of reason to see North Augusta's prominence growing and for the city to one day be the largest municipality in Edgefield County. Natural growth is not deterred by lines on a map, and the line that denotes the boundary beween Aiken and Edgefield counties will play no part in the growth of North Augusta.
Exciting things are occurring within North Augusta from the new municipal building to development along the Savannah River to the new growth in Edgefield County. North Augusta is much, much more than a bedroom community for its namesake across the river.
