Portnoy to direct USC orchestra event in Aiken
A highly respected musical conductor will return to Aiken for a one-night-only performance.
The final performance of the Aiken Performing Arts Group's (APAG) Portfolio series brings Maestro Donald Portnoy to the Aiken stage for the first time since his departure from the Augusta Symphony Orchestra.
Portnoy will conduct the USC Symphony Orchestra featuring pianist Dr. Arthur Tollefson on Wednesday at 8 p.m. on the USC Aiken Etherredge Center stage. The program for the concert includes Dvorak's "Slavonic Dances No. 8," Brahms' "Symphony No. 1" and Grieg's "Piano Concerto in A."
"They are a major university-based symphony orchestra of more than 70 musicians," said Thomas Hofstetter, APAG founder and president. "The USC Symphony Orchestra reflects a maturity beyond their years. Instrumentalists range from undergraduate to doctoral candidates from all over the world and reflect upon Donald Portnoy's recruiting efforts. He spent 18 years as the conductor of the Augusta Symphony and he conducted the Augusta Symphony approximately 50 times on the Etherredge Center stage, and this is his return to that podium accompanied by the internationally recognized pianist Arthur Tollefson."
Tickets are $30 a person or $20 a student. For tickets or more information, call 641-3305. For more information about APAG, e-mail AikenPAG@gforcecable.com.
