Vroom, vroom! Children got to pretend they were on the ride of their lives Saturday during Touch-a-Truck at the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center.

Young ones scampered all over the center's field Saturday during the sixth annual event, which provided an informal chance for children to climb on, sit and play in various service vehicles.

There was a bulldozer, a tractor, a garbage truck, an 18-wheeler, two military vehicles and more.

RSC Equipment Rental sponsored the event.

Children enjoyed climbing in the driver's seat, twisting the steering wheel and pushing buttons.

The horns seemed to be a particular favorite.

Small fingers pressed eagerly on the horns time and again. Across the soccer field came the blast from the cherry picker truck, followed by an answering call from a military vehicle.

Toward the end of the event, an official with the Aiken Department of Public Safety hooked a fire hose up to a nearby hydrant and treated kids and parents to a soakdown.

Lee Ogden followed her young son and niece around at Touch-a-Truck.

"They can experience these vehicles," she said. "My husband is an over-the-road driver and he's got a big truck and they love to get in it. I love this. He's (my son) wanting to get in everything." Ogden said she was having fun, getting to see inside and learning more about the heavy machinery.

New this year were pony rides. City of Aiken Parks, Recreation and Tourism Program Coordinator Alicia Davis said she tries to add something new each year.

"And that (the pony rides) was a great hit," Davis said. "The kids are having fun. Parents are smiling, kids are smiling. It's one big, happy crowd."

Cody Baker took his son Saturday because young Ethan wanted to see the trucks and tractors.

"He wanted to sit in the seats," Cody said. "He gets to see how big it is and experience it."
